If Manchester’s soul had a sound, it would reverberate in the kaleidoscopic chaos of Homobloc. It’s not just an event; it’s a celebration, a movement, a sweaty, glitter-drenched hug from the city itself. The Warehouse Project (WHP), that industrial cathedral of sound next to the train tracks, transforms into something entirely otherworldly for Homobloc 2024 – queer madness - where every beat, every cheer, and every outfit radiates pure joy.
Walking into Depot Mayfield for Homobloc is like stepping into a parallel universe. The gritty, industrial vibe of the old railway depot dissolves into an explosion of colour, sound, and movement. Neon lights danced off every surface, transforming the space into a fever dream of queerness, love, and liberation. The venue – normally a cavernous reminder of Manchester’s industrial past – felt alive with thousands of people unapologetically living their truth.
There was something in the air – not just the fog from the smoke machines but a tangible feeling of connection. You didn’t just see the diversity; you felt it. The room was filled with drag queens, kings, club kids, and ravers all moving as one. Everywhere you turned, there was another moment of joy – a laugh, a kiss, a ridiculous dance move. Homobloc isn’t just a night out; it’s a way of life.
This year’s lineup? Fucking stacked. From the sounds of Rahim Redcar (fka Christine and the Queens), whose set felt like being wrapped in sonic velvet and then thrown into a vortex of emotion. Later, I found myself in the throes of Job Jobse B2B Saoirse, where basslines cut through the air like a knife, to bouncing around with HorsegiirL - Unapologetically fun.
But it wasn’t just about discovery – it was about celebration. 2ManyDJs B2B Confidence Man DJs threw down a euphoric set that had us sweating out in madness with every drop.
Shygirl Presents Club Shy? A wild explosion of energy that had the crowd screaming for more. And Horse Meat Disco brought that unmistakable queer disco magic, proving once again why they’re the beating heart of any party they touch. We live for Horse Meat Disco!
This wasn’t just a lineup – it was a sonic buffet, serving something for every palate. From the sultry rhythms of Chloé Caillet to the chaos of LSDXOXO live, the night was an endless stream of beats. In all honesty, we just went with the flow - where the music lured us, taken into the pit, no letting go!
Homobloc is Manchester at its best. The crowd was a beautiful combination of identities, styles, and vibes – everyone free, everyone welcome. I danced with strangers who felt like friends by the end of the night. I sang with drag queens in glitter-soaked wigs. I watched ballroom performers take over the stage with moves that left us all slack-jawed.
Manchester isn’t just the setting for Homobloc – it’s the soul of it. This is a city that knows its history, knows its grit, and wears its heart on its sleeve. Homobloc embodies that spirit – loud, proud, and unashamedly itself. This night wasn’t just about music; it was a celebration of the queer community that shapes and defines the city’s culture.
As the night blurred into morning, one thing became crystal clear: Homobloc is a masterclass in creating space for joy. It’s fun, sexy, and oozes with love – the kind of love that can only come from a shared celebration of identity and music. It’s everything a night in Manchester should be, amplified to the max.
Leaving the venue, glitter still clinging to my face and my legs aching from hours of dancing, I felt a deep sense of pride. It isn’t just one of the best nights at WHP – it’s one of the best nights anywhere.
If you’ve never been, you’re missing out on something truly magical. Manchester knows how to party, and Homobloc is the ultimate proof of that. See you at the next one, yeah? As always, at the FRONT ❤️ Follow us! ACID RAIN
